The purpose of this assignment was to introduce us to the ideas and techniques involved in creating an original typeface. Our typeface had to reflect New Zealand in some way (culture, nature, geography etc.) We needed to consider the intended use of this new typeface, ensuring it is legible and consistent. I created this typeface over eight weeks based on the stories of my ancestors and their journey to New Zealand. It certainly isn't perfect, but as I gain knowledge through the industry I would like to continue working on this typeface because I really enjoyed the process of creating typography. I gained inspiration for my typeface through Aroha Tamihana's Ngaa Miha typeface, as well as Kris Sowersby/Klim's Domaine display typeface. I have included images from my workbook to show my working processes.
